It is expected to be one of the most watched political events in history, the first of three critical presidential debates on Monday night.

Democrat Hillary Clinton will face Republican Donald Trump.

“Forget the Super Bowl. Forget the Olympics this is your battle royal,” said Dr. Robert Watson, a professor of American History and politics at Lynn University.  “I’ve been saying for a while we don’t need a moderator we need a referee.”

Watson is expecting a show and a showdown Monday night. Watson has been teaching politics for more than 20 years and says both candidates face challenges in this first debate.

“Trump must look presidential,” said Watson.  “The challenge for Hillary, how do I get under his skin and get him off his game without looking condescending or like the aggressor.”

The other challenge they both face, according to Watson, attracting the undecided voters.

“You have to run to the middle to attract those undecided but you can’t completely ignore your base.”

Watson believes both candidates will not change their message, but they have to “avoid being the target of a major zinger.”

Watson says there is also no denying the fact that millions of Americans will not be swayed by Monday nights debate and are simply tuning in for the entertainment.
