Juan Diasgranados joined the news team in July 2012. He is currently a multimedia journalist and reporter for Around Town on WPTV.
Several of Juan's stories have gone viral, including a Florida Atlantic University student who graduated at the age of 17, and a 5-year-old Drum Major from Belle Glade who ended up on "Ellen."
Three days out of the week, Juan goes out to write, edit, shoot, and report his own stories. The other two days, Juan assists in managing the website and social media accounts at WPTV to promote, enhance and protect the company's brand reputation.
Juan graduated from the Scripps Howard School of Journalism and Communications at Hampton University. At Hampton, Juan was a reporter and anchor for the school's TV station. He was also the Promotions Director for the school's radio station, and hosted a Jazz and Hip Hop show. He has interviewed many influential guests including Civil Rights Activist Al Sharpton, Boxer/Entrepreneur George Foreman, and Singer Miguel.
During his tenure at Hampton University, Juan interned at many news organizations. He interned with the Scripps Semester in Washington program, WRC/NBC4 in Washington DC, and MSNBC in New York. His favorite stories include covering First Lady Michelle Obama at a Military Fundraiser, and following the journey of a 9-year-old participant in the Scripps National Spelling Bee.
Asked why he wanted to get into the field, he said, "To be honest, just knowing that I have the power to put a smile on someone's face or help out someone in need, really keeps me going. There's no better feeling than being able to relate and connect with the viewers."
Originally from Maryland, Juan currently lives in West Palm Beach, and is enjoying the warm weather. In his spare time, you can catch him on the beach or fishing. He is currently the Vice President for Broadcast for the South Florida Chapter of the National Association of Black Journalists, and a member of The Fishing Academy where he teaches kids how to swim, snorkel, kayak, and fish.
