A small island in Martin County that locals call "Bird Island," is now being formally designated as a "Critical Wildlife Area". The Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission just made it official.
The spoil island is an important nesting site for a variety of birds. That's why the entire island and the water around it, are closed to the public.
Based on the abundance and diversity of birds using the two-acre island, biologists consider Bird Island one of the top 10 waterbird colonies in South Florida.
